It’s May in Yellowknife, which means the ice is going out, the days are getting longer, and I’m introducing a free weekly campground yoga class this month that I’m really excited about. Check out my May class schedule below to find out more.
This May, I’m also offering something simple for Mental Health Awareness Month — when you register for one of my Collective Soul classes, you can bring a friend for free. A small way to spend time together, move your bodies, and take care of yourselves.
Through April, I’ve been teaching Hatha Yoga for Every Body on Thursday nights at Collective Soul Space, and one of the things I love most is how quickly a room becomes familiar. You start to recognize which floorboards creak. You pick a spot in the room that feels comfortable and safe. Your body settles faster each week because it recognizes where it is.
There’s real value in that. Familiarity lets you stop paying attention to the space and start paying attention to yourself.
But this month, I’m adding free Saturday morning classes at the kitchen shelter on C-Loop at the Prelude Lake Campground, and a kitchen shelter doesn’t work like a studio. You’ve got a roof, but there are lots of other unpredictable variables. It’s not heated, and the weather might be cold. The wind comes through. The light is whatever the sky decides. Someone’s dog is losing its mind at a squirrel. It’s not controlled, and it’s not quiet.
Sutra 2.46 says the posture should be steady and comfortable. Sthira and sukha. Firmness and ease. Most of us hear that and think it’s about the poses very specifically. But I think you can also apply it to what happens when the familiar stuff falls away, and you have to find your ground without it. Not in the room. Not in the routine. In yourself.
That’s what I want to explore this summer. What steadiness feels like when the ground isn’t perfectly flat, and the world isn’t quiet.
I think it might teach us something the studio can’t. Hopefully, you can make your way out there one Saturday this summer.
Here’s when and where I’m teaching in May:
May Special: For Mental Health Awareness Month, I invite you to bring a friend for free when you register for any of my Collective Soul classes. Because feeling better often starts with simple things — movement, breath, and connection.
Join me for:
Hatha Yoga for Every Body
Every Thursday from 7-8 PM
@ Collective Soul Space
A slow, intentional practice designed for all levels, including complete beginners. We hold poses and repeat the same sequence all month, focusing on learning one more advanced pose each month. And we always end with savasana. This class is included in the May “bring a friend for free” offer.
Gentle Yoga
Wednesday, May 6 and 20 from 12:10-12:50 PM
@ Collective Soul Space
A 40-minute midday reset. Slow, quiet, and designed to help you land back in your body in the middle of a busy day. No experience needed. You’re welcome to bring a friend for free in May.
Prelude Lake Campground Yoga – Starting May 16
Every Saturday (starting May 16) from 10-11 AM
@ the Kitchen Shelter on C-Loop.
These classes will explore yoga. We’ll work through yin, restorative, flow, and hatha classes over the summer. Bring your own mat or a towel, water, and a layer in case it’s chilly. Open to everyone, including beginners. If the weather is truly terrible, I’ll post a cancellation on Instagram by 8:00 AM.
How to sign up:
You can register for all classes through Momoyoga at momoyoga.com/amy-kennedy-yoga. It’s free to create an account, and you’ll be able to see the full schedule, save your spot, and pay online. You’ll also get an email reminder for classes you’ve signed up for. If you have a Collective Soul Space Punch Pass, you can use one punch for both the Gentle Yoga and the Hatha Yoga for Every Body classes. Or you can just show up and pay $15 cash on the day.
If there’s someone you’ve been meaning to spend time with, this is a good place to start. See you both on the mat.
And if we’re not connected yet, come find me on Instagram and Facebook.
